"Today I worked with a patient who needed me to be by her side for a complicated MRI at the hospital. As an End of Life Doula, I help wherever the patient needs me. There were so many instances today that could have gone wrong, that would have gone wrong in our six hour visit if I was not with her. Having six months of life ahead of her, she is not in good shape. There were a few moments where I felt if I was not by her side, she would have been dismissed with ease. Thank you Ilene for your advocacy training. Although I felt I knew a lot, there were many things you taught me that came to the top of my mind today, important things. I am grateful to have taken the class and even more grateful to have learned the additional knowledge that assisted me in my six hour journey with her today.
Many thanks!"

Why is My Work Different?

All training has been developed in collaboration with local, national and world leaders in patient safety, and is continually updated.  I use the true stories of patients, their families, and those who work in the healthcare system to engage and motivate the audience.  With thousands of hours at the bedside helping patients and their family, I use personal experiences as a way of developing educational tools.  My work as an advocate for vulnerable populations such as people who have various disabilities, people who are transgender and people with limited English has given me insight to problems often not recognized by the healthcare system.  Patient safety happens at the bedside, not in the board room.  We need to be closer to the patient to get it right.   Patient safety education can even be fun and interactive!

I focus on health literacy / communication and specializing in patient and family engagement for truly patient centered care.  Patient safety can be about celebrating the partnership.

Do you know the difference between a patient advocate and the person you choose to put on your healthcare proxy form?

Is it privacy, or is it HIPAA?
